York Electric furnace won't shut down heating elements

Hello DIY family,

Today my furnace decided not to shut down the elements and it's getting pretty hot.

Let me explain;

I have a York furnace that works with a thermo pump that also gives A/C and heating. Since around a month the thermo pump is the one that has been supplying the heating but somehow today even though no settings were changed in the thermostat ( I checked) the furnace is the one that's turning on, not the thermo pump. (temp outside is currently -1c and it's snowing).

When the house gets to the temperature set by the thermostat it shuts down the blower, but somehow the element stays engaged. Once the element gets pretty hot the blower starts again and then turns off when the element cools down which it takes just a few secs, however the cycle keeps going on and on with the same intervals.

I did some research and it appears to be the sequencer but I cannot find it. Could It be possible that I dont have it? I know I have a limit switch, but I do not know if it's supposed to the same.

I need to know if the limit switch in this furnace replaces the sequencer or if it's common for the furnace to have both. I will post the photos to see if you guys can identify the sequencer.

Thanks a in advance and I look forward to your input.

Your furnace should have both. What is the model number?

Welcome to the forums.

The pics are good. You have a heat pump with backup electric heat.
I do not see a sequencer in your unit. I see a 6-7 relay timer control board.

If the room temperature is 3 or more degrees below the set temperature..... the electric reheats come on. This is the biggest reason to not use a setback thermostat with a heat pump.

We are going to need a make and model of the air handler OR a model number off that control board.

We could use a picture of the wiring with that black cable tie cut and the splices fanned out.

My guess is a defective stat or defective control board.

My York control board has an LED which flashes error codes ... there may be a list of flash code meanings on a label somewhere which might guide you.

From the York install manual:

Fan On Lock Condition
If the limit switch opens multiple times during a single call for electric
heat (fault code 3) or if the limit switch opens for a long duration (fault
code 4), the control will energize the blower until power is removed from
the control. The control will cycle the heat outputs on and off as the limit
re-closes and opens. The constant fan operation will signal the homeowner
that a problem has occurred and a service call is required.

There's a lockout switch at each heating element and its state is supplied to the control board which then acts as above when there's twouble.

I'd look for obstructed air flow - how's the filter ?

I want also to let you guys know that after a while I thought about changing the setting of the thermostat into E-heat (emergency heating) which is the one that starts the furnace. Once I did switch from heat to e-heat the furnace element turned off and I haven't had any other incident since then. Right now the thermo pump is working just fine and the furnace hasn't come on again while the thermostat remains in Heat.

Not sure how you posted the model number but it's not usable.

Since you only have electric reheats..... AUX and E should perform the same function.
AUX is heat pump and electric reheats. E is electric reheats only.
Can't help you further without a picture of the splices undone and model number.

I have a York unit and my control board's number is 031-01213-000 (patent#4967042).

Thermostat DSL 450
with the options: Auto/ day and night/ Heat which works with the thermo pump/ Cool which also works with the thermo pump, and E-Heat which works only with the furnace.

York Electric furnace won't shut down heating elements

Hello. I was wondering if you had found a solution to your problem. I have the same circuit board and I'm looking for a relay to replace one on the board.

Hmmmmm.... seems I've missed this thread.

When I said splices undone I just meant to cut the cable ties and fan out the splices so I can see how they are connected.

If the problem is a stuck/burned relay...... there won't be a generic replacement relay. You'll be required to use a meter as well as soldering/desoldering equipment to remove it from the board. Basically.... the board is a replaceable part.

Model # N2AHD10A06E

After checking around.... the info I just found says there are sequencers in those air handlers.

Hello Pete. I cannot find the exact relay that is on the board. It is a P&B relay, part number T90N1D42-22-01. The -22- indicates a 22 volt coil. I can, however, find the exact same relay with the coil voltage 24. Do you think this would work?
