New Heat Pump Owner (Goodman)

Hello All,

I am a new heat pump owner and have a quick question. I have a dual heating system with a heat pump and furnace that is on propane. The heat pump has been working great until it dipped below 20 degrees and it just couldn't keep up. I decided to switch the system to emergency heat to use the furnace/propane. This, as you know, turned off the heat pump unit outside. I expected it to steam for awhile to get down to the sub 20 degree temp, but what I am experiencing right now is the unit outside has been steaming ever since 2PM yesterday and it is 11AM the next day, so almost 24 hours. I have had the emergency heat on all this time, so the unit outside should be shut off.

I guess my question is, why is it still steaming after almost 24 hours of it being shut off? Is this normal and what I should expect, or is there something wrong with the heat pump unit outside. (I did confirm that the unit is off. The fan hasn't spun the whole time that I could see the unit).

Any info you guys can provide would be awesome.

Thanks so much!

No that's not normal. Turn the breaker off to the heat pump and see if it stops.

**Update**

I was able to get out there and take a closer look. It is actually a PVC exhaust pipe from the furnace that is directly behind the Unit outside that is blowing steam out. It is blow steam by the AC unit, which is making it look like the unit is steaming.

yes, that will do it.

Your change-over, ideally should be automatic based on outdoor temp and not keeping up, whichever comes first.
