Central A/C suddenly stopped heating - dead coil?

Late 80's Trane central system suddenly stopping heating. Compressor runs, handler runs, the blue heat light is on, both mercury switches are in contact. Moving switch to "Emergency Heat" makes no difference. Any likely culprit other than a dead heating coil?

Thanks.

Many heat pump systems in Florida don't have backup or electric emergency heat. This depends on the location in Florida.

A Trane heat pump needs 24vac applied to the reversing valve to get heat. The reversing valve could be defective or a problem on the defrost board could act similarly.
