Goodman Heat Pump Problem

Hello,
I have an old (23 years) Goodman which has been lightly used and is still functioning. It will produce warm air even in cold outdoor temperatures. The thermostat is the original Janitrol hpt 18-60. Recently, I've noticed that when the temperature indoors reaches the temperature to which the thermostat is set, the blower will not shut off and continues to blow unheated air. Is this a thermostat problem?

More likely a stuck relay in the air handler.

I agree. If that Goodman has electric reheat coils then it most likely has a sequencer in it which controls the heat strips and the blower. The sequencer could be defective. Post the full model number from the air handler for us.

 

If sequencer problem then normally would be getting warm air.

Some Goodman's have an EBTDR (Electronic Blower Time Delay Relay). Its job is to run the fan for about a minute after the heat turns off. The timer on it may be bad. Try turning just the fan on for a minute and see what happens.

 

how long after reaching set point does it continue to run ?
If forever how do you turn it off ?
Is there a chance that the thermostat is set to fan on rather than fan auto ?

Thanks for all the feedback. I've checked the unit in the crawl space. Unfortunately, the years have worn the serial number and model number off the paper on the air handler. I called Goodman and asked what air handlers might have been used with the outside unit (model CPYH30-1FB). I got a list which is probably not that helpful.

This unit does have heat strips. When the unit reaches the interior temp set on the thermostat, it runs continuously, blowing unheated air. I can turn it off by using the switch on the thermostat.
I'm sorry I can't provide the information we really need to figure this out.

What switch on the thermostat ?

If you can do something at the thermostat that turns the blower off...... good chance it's a thermostat problem.

The thermostat is the standard Janitrol hpt 18-60. It has a switch that can be set to Heat - Off - Cool. When the temperature in the house as reflected on the thermostat approaches the temp as set on the thermostat, I just turn the switch from Heat to Off. That turns off the whole system including the fan.

If you can turn the stat to OFF and the blower shuts down..... it's a thermostat problem.

When you look for or purchase a thermostat..... you need one for a heat pump with backup AUX heat. You can also look to see if it has the ability for emergency heat too.
