Is 40k btu unit the same as 40k btu furnace?
In terms of gas usage and heat output?
I'm considering either an attic mounted furnace or hanging unit heater for my garage shop.
If both heaters are rated at 40k input btu, will they use the same amount of gas to heat the space?
80% furnace and seperated combustion unit heater.

Multiply the burner's btu output by the efficiency and that's how much heat you will get in the room. And, 40k btu of gas burned is 40k btu of gas burned so it all comes down to the unit's efficiency to determine which will consume less gas to heat the space.

Although the amount of heat produced will be very similar between units.... the furnace with the ducts will distribute the heat better making it more effective.
