Removing glue from painted cardboard box

Hi

I have small painted thin cardboard boxes, similar to an inkjet toner cartridge box. It has a label attached to it by thick layer of glue drops, I i tried to use a hair dryer and rubbing alcohol to remove the label without leaving any glue residue behind . I was able to remove the label but the I could not get the residue off without scratching the surface or spreading the glue or the paint got fainted. I need to remove the glue and not to leave any residue behind without harming the surface or the paint . Please help Thanks

You might try a little mineral spirits and see how it does.

You might also try putting the boxes in the freezer for about an hour. That sometimes will allow the glue to be just "popped" off with a plastic tool or scraper.
