Closet light to come on when I open the door, off when I close it

Does anyone have any ideas how I can automate the light in a closet? Come on when the door opens, closes when it shuts?

Thanks for your reply,

Tim

A simple door switch will do what you want to do - I see it all the time in new homes (mostly on pantry doors.)

You'll want to make sure your switch is rated for 120VAC and is a normally open type, then run a wire from the light back to the door. Put the switch on the hot wire and that's pretty much it.

When the door opens, the switch closes turning the light on.

If you can't run a wire, you could use a motion-activated light - I believe X-10 has something that would work.

Good luck!

Door switches

Door switches are definately the way to go. Motion detectors can often be irritating when they go off to soon or stay on too long (a very difficult balance to achieve). There are many types of door switch on the market. My favourite type uses a magnet embedded into the door to activate a switch embedded into the frame.

Leviton makes a great motion activated wall switch. However the switch needs to be inside the closet to work properly.

Otherwise use the door switch like the other have suggested.
