x10 special offer

Noticed x10 has a $99 package special. I'm new to home automation and wonder if this is a good way to get started? Anyone using the same? I noticed it included a Palm controller but shouldn't there be a receiver somewhere or is that used to control one of the devices?

Thanks.

It's been a while since you posted, and I'm not sure if you're still looking at this package, but for what it's worth...

Smarthome offers an INSTEON starter kit for not too much more than that. After doing some research, I selected INSTEON for the switches in my home theater room. They also sell plug-in modules, e.g., to control individual outlets.

They have received good reviews for reliability and customer service, are backward compatible with X10, and are easy to set up and use. I'm not personally using the X10 features of the switches, but I now have around 10 installed throughout my home. The response times for remote switching are good, and the units have been reliable so far (3-4 months now).

It might be worth checking out.
