Adjusting travel on automatic garage door

The door on my garage, coupled to a 1/2 hp Craftsman opener, closes when cued, the opens back up. By timing the pressing of the switch, I can shut the motor off just before it starts to reopen the door.
Reading a lot of the postings, I am thinking the travel needs to be adjusted somewhat. It closes all the way to the floor, with no gap, but the door does not seem to "bounce" doing so.
How is this done? I have no manual to go by.

Sounds like you need to adjust the "down" travel limiter. The door thinks it is running into an obstruction in the normal range of motion rather than the end of its travel. There should be two adjustment screws on the side or back of the unit; one is the travel limit adjuster and the other is the down force adjustment.
