Washing Machine Electrical Repair

I'm trying to fix a washing machine. (I don't know technical names of parts, so I apologize if this is at all confusing.) One of the copper wires leading from the control panel to the motor broke off inside a plastic connector piece - a piece that plugs into a part on the side of the motor. I'm assuming that I will need to remove the remaining pieces of wire inside the plastic piece, somehow strip and extend the copper wire, and then reattach the wire within the piece. How do I safely do this?

Not a easy repair. Is it the big plug in motor or one of the smaller ones either on or near motor? Did the wire completely break or is the connection loose at motor. Have seen the neutral (white) wire loose connection at motor. that one I have been able to tighten connection by putting small screwdriver in plug and bending tab slightly. (not easy)
