Home electrical malfuntion

This home was built in 1984 all electrical is service is under ground. A large step down transformer is at end of driveway. along with meters and main breakers for two homes, with buried lines to the homes. Entrance breaker box is on inside wall of the grarage. This home is in a rural area and uses grounding rods.

Now the problem. When a heavy load is placed on a circut of one 120 volt leg the voltage on the circuts of the other 120 leg will rise conciderably. This is a resent problem and no work has been done to the system.

in hopes of an answer

you have a bad neutral. most likely where the local utility connects to your entrance wire. You'll have to call the local power provider and have them check their side of your meter connection first. if they kill the power to the house you can check the neutral wire in your main breaker panel. they may not want to look inside your panel as their responsibility ends at the meter. the reason that the one leg of your service goes up as you load the other is due to that leg trying to find a path back to the generating source, and with a faulty neutral this is another path, all be it not the correct one. this is a dangerous condition and could cause serious damage to any appliances and potentially a fire hazard as the opposing line is transmitting a voltage above and beyond it design capabilities.
