VCR question

I am repairing a tosiba vcr it will play for about 15 seconds and then shut off. Do you think that could be a bad capstan belt? The vcr is about 17 years old.

That would make it about 1985. Sounds like the reel sensor is not sending the pulses back to micro to lock in the play mode. The take-up reel and sensor should be belt driven, if so the belt might be soft and gummy. Its also a good idea to change all the belts due to the age of the unit. The next thing to check is your center LED on the chassis and the tape-end sensors on the sides of the cassette loading carriage.
