rear speakers cut out
I have a home theater set up with two front, two rear and one center speaker. It is powered by a Sony receiver with Dolby Surround.
Why is it that my rear speakers work fine while viewing cable broadcasts or listening to the radio, but don't work when I play movies on my VCR or DVD player?

It's hard to say, but it's probably a setting on the receiver. If you read the manual from cover to cover you'll probably figure it out.
Most likely, you can define that Prologic (I'm guessing it's Dolby Prologic) is turned on or off for each input. In that case you'd need to turn it on for VCR and DVD.
If you want to throw money at the problem, for $150-200 you can get an entry level Dolby Digital receiver. The difference between Prologic and Digital is so dramatic that anyone could hear it. It would be the automotive equivalent of going from a 4 cylinder econobox to a V8. Only downside is that for the most part you only get the benefits while watching DVDs.
