TV/VCR won't catch a tape. . .

My TV/VCR won't catch a tape anymore (only the third time a tape has been inserted) and the tape can easily be worked back out of the slot. When I hit Power, whether the tape is in the slot or not, the TV comes on and I hear one short, quiet whirr then the TV and VCR both go off after a spectacular 5 second run. It's a five-year-old, inexpensive Sylvania/Funai machine -- is it worth having a dealer look at it? Thanks - jon.

Forget about the VCR. You can buy a brand new 4-head hi-fi VCR for what you'll be charged just to open the old one up.
If the TV still works, keep it. But don't fix the VCR.

Thanks, I thought that might be the case. The TV is fine apart from the fact that it now shuts down each time the VCR times out.

Is there possibly a simple way (that a simple person would understand ) to allow the TV to operate completely on its own, isolated from the VCR?
