Sharp 25in hums when it's turned off...

I have a Sharp 25in TV that is about 7 years old. TV works great except you can here a humming noise when it's turned off.
It is plugged into a "slim plug" extention cord so the entertainment center can be closer to the wall.
Are it's days numbered, and is there any risk(fire) leaving it like this?

When in doubt pull the plug; you'll sleep better at night.
As a technician the last thing I do is shut all my benches with a wall switch or remove the plugs from the wall.
Some sets have standby transformers but they should not be making a loud hum. The degaussing circuit can be loud at times but for only a short duration. If the hum is coming from the speaker you could have audio circuit problems.
Only a qualified technician should open your TV and fix your problem!
