TV sound No Good

I have a small color TV with an excellent picture, but the voices come through staticky and not much volume. Once in a while it is clear. Do you know what could be the matter? and would it cost much to get it repaired?

It's not so much as how much it costs as who will you take it to for repairs. The old days of TV Repair Shops is pretty much history. TV's are now "throw away" items.
I assume you have "slapped it around" a little and it doesn't get better. So, scratch the possibility of a bad solder connection.
The circuit involved is the FM-IF (intermediate frequency)and sound amplifier circuit. If the set is relatively new (last five years), this will be one integrated circuit, usually. I would expect the IC has failed and should be replaced. Cost of replacement depends if the IC is a plug-in or if it is a solder in. If you take the back off the set, usually you will find a "map" inside that identifies each circuit and each IC. If it is a plug in, you can take a magnifying glass, get the numbers and letters off the suspect IC, take the numbers to most parts houses (including Radio Shack) and get a generic replacement for $5 - $10, and replace it yourself. Taking it to someone else to repair? Techs get around $100 an hour these days so the cost of direct replacement of the TV starts to sound appealing. If you have a buddy that is an electronic hobbiest, you might save a few bucks and get it done for a six pack of Budd. Good luck and let us know how this turns out.

Hello Smokey: Thank you very much for your advice. We took the back off the TV, but there was no map in it. We did find one connection was loose and so soldered it, but it did not help. What a shame that all these "unfixable" TVs are going to fill up our dumps!!! Thanks again!!

The absence of the "map" bears out my saying that the sets are "throw-aways". The older sets had "maps" and were set up to be worked on. Not so anymore.
