JVC VCR head-pulling

Since there's no moderator I'm not sure who can answer this but here's the problem:
my old (~1990) JVC VCR had its record head go bad, so I ordered a replacement head from MCM and handed it off to one of our engineers to fix (I work at a TV station). He returned it to me saying it does not unscrew like most, but requires a head puller that no one around here seems to have. Is there any way to get it off without the puller? Would a repair shop pull the head for me without doing any other repairs, and if so how much should that cost? Are there special tools required to put the new one on? For the record I DID buy a new VCR (Panasonic) but I don't like it nearly as much as my top-of-the-line JVC.

You've encountered one of the unwritten bylaws of consumer electronics for the year 2000: All consumer electronics are throw-away items.
About 1989, they started building equipment with the attitude that it would never be repaired and one of the changes was the irreplaceable head. You will find this situation in JVC, Panasonic, Sony, etc. Once it is installed, it is there forever (or until failure).
We have been (for a few centuries) do-it-yourself folks and have enjoyed the opportunity to fix our radios, our TV's, and our tape decks. At consumer level electronics, this has all gone away. The only machines that are actually being repaired are at Commercial (Hotel-Motel) and Broadcast level. If you spend the extra dollars to buy these type of machines, you get the technical support.
You may contact JVC and get hold of the head puller (maybe) but you will endure a lot of maniacal laughter.
My advice is to get your money back on the heads you bought, chuck the old machine in the trash, and enjoy what you have. Next time you buy a machine, think Sharp.

*** Look in the MCM catalog and you can purchase a head puller. Make sure you put the head back on the way it came off or you will be 180 out. But... since the "record" and playback head is the same the likely hood of a record faliure and not play back is slim. More than likely another problem a crept up and like Smokey said, chuck it and buy a new one. Sharp is ok but spend the bucks for a new JVC! You wont go wrong. Later...
