confusing speaker problem

My sony receiver has inputs for 2 sets of speakers, A-right/left& B-right/left. When i connect a pair of speakers to either set A or B. only the right speaker works. On both sets, the left speaker crackles and is all broken up. If i plug 1 speaker into Right A and the other into Right B they both work so its not a wire problem.
HELP?

It seems you are getting bad or no signal from the left channels, which means ether the amplifer or the speaker switch is faulty.

It is probably your receiver. To test it, swap the left and right speaker wiring at the back of the receiver. If the speaker that used to sound fine now crackles, it is definitely the receiver or possibly the source. If it does it for all sources, it's the receiver.
