Angry connecting new dvd/vcr player to existing cable box/tv

Please help us!!!We have a set top cable box that cable comes into and this connects into the TV via 6 connecting wires running into new TV. Cable works fine using the remote the Cable company provided.
We just purchased a DVD/VCR unit with an HDMI cable(recommended for better picture quality) and cannot figure out how to hook everything up. (1) Do we just hook the HDMI cable from the DVD/VCR player directly into the back of the TV and everything will work? (2) Do we reroute the cable in into the DVD/VCR player, then use another (provided) cable wire to connect the DVD/VCR player back into the cable box? (3) With the DVD/VCR unit came yet another remote - do we use this to run just the DVD/VCR player or does that now run the TV/Cable box too? (4) We can't get any buttons to work on the DVD/VCR player to set up time/date, etc. (neither the remote seems to work nor any of the buttons on the DVD/VCR unit and we certainly have not been able to get the DVD/VCR set up information to the TV screen?
It just can't get any more complicated than this?
Thanks for feedback

Yes, you may have to set the options in the DVD/TV to use the HDMI

(2) Do we reroute the cable in into the DVD/VCR player, then use another (provided) cable wire to connect the DVD/VCR player back into the cable box?

Yes and no, you only need to have a cable going from DVD/VCR to cable box if you plan on recording something onto the VCR. If so, just a simple pair of RCA plugs will work (yellow, red, white)

(3) With the DVD/VCR unit came yet another remote - do we use this to run just the DVD/VCR player or does that now run the TV/Cable box too?

This is up too you. You can program the cable remote to use on the DVD/VCR player. Look in the cable remotes owners manual.

(4) We can't get any buttons to work on the DVD/VCR player to set up time/date, etc. (neither the remote seems to work nor any of the buttons on the DVD/VCR unit and we certainly have not been able to get the DVD/VCR set up information to the TV screen?

You have to have this unit hooked up to the TV properly so you can see the menus. What type of cables, and how are they hooked up right now? Your DVD/VCR "video out" connections should be connected to the TV's "video in". Same with the audio.
Remember to select the right "source" for your TV.

Unhappy Answers to DVD/VCR questions

Thanks for the responses. We will try to set up HDMI in the TV set up and see if that helps. We understand the recording to VCR from the Cable box (using the red, white and yellow cables) - now is that just VCR? If we want to record a TV show can we do it to the DVD player?

We are going to try to use the cable remote for all three. As far as cables between the DVD/VCR player and the TV there is just one that we hooked up and that is the HDMI cable. Do we need to set up another? And finally, you are saying we do NOT need to reroute the cable from coming into the cable box to bring in into the DVD/VCR player?

Thanks again for assisting

"If we want to record a TV show can we do it to the DVD player?"

Only if this is a DVD +/- R player. Most likely it is not.

"As far as cables between the DVD/VCR player and the TV there is just one that we hooked up and that is the HDMI cable. Do we need to set up another?"

This should be fine. Look in your TV's and DVD players manual to make sure you tell each of these pieces of equipment to activate the HDMI source, if that makes sense.

"And finally, you are saying we do NOT need to reroute the cable from coming into the cable box to bring in into the DVD/VCR player?"

If you got these RCA wires hooked up, this is fine. You can recored from the cable box onto the VCR.

Can you provide me with the DVD players make and model #, along with the TV's?

new dvd/vcr installation

Actually it is a DVD Recorder/Video Cassette Recorder listed as a Super Multi DVD-RAM/-RW/-R/+RW/+R Recording unit.

And then once we have the RCA wires hooked up then we do not need to change in the incoming cable wire from the Cable Box. Now these RCA cables (red, white and yellow) are going from the DVD/VCR player to the back of the TV, Yes?

Thanks again

I believe you will need those RCA's from the DVD/VCR to the TV just for use of the VCR.

The DVD portion of the unit should have the HDMI going from the unit to the TV.
