Picture quality

I just purchased a new 47" HDTV and have a question about the picture display sizing.

Some picture channels have the top&bottoms chopped off, while others have the sides, and top/bottoms not filling the screen.

I have analog cable. No digital as of yet, because it is not offered by cable company.

Shouldn't the broad casted stations pictures fill the screen?

Sorry, i'm a novice at this, and probably will be back with many more questions.

Thanks

Check to see if you have a button on the remote that's labeled something like "View Mode" or something similar. That's the button for our Sharp to adjust the view.

Different programs have different screen formats. You can use the zoom feature the fill the screen, but it will make people look fat and squat.
Not all films or broadcasts will fill the screen normally.

I'm thinking your right as i see the same effect on another T.V.

I assume its broadcast that way for best viewing.
