Not a good sign. Best guess (based on your description) is that there is a blue smear trailing off from the figures. This would point to a blue (basic color) projection tube in its death throes. The conditions is caused by secondary emission from the gun cathode. That system uses three projection tubes (Red, Green, and Blue). You didn't say how old the system is but five years is about average for projection gun life.

You never lost a dime on that system if it ran ten years, my friend. But, consider the fact that you cannot find a TV repair shop anymore. If you do find someone to fix the thing, they are asking $100 an hour plus parts. There's no sense on buying that projection TV again. Spend your money for one of the new ones. If you plan on a projection system again, consider Mitsubishi as the king of the crop.
One other factor when making the decision to either repair or replace: historically, the high voltage power supply will fail shortly after you replace the projection tubes on these units.
