i used a power inverter in my truck for a tv+vcr combo, one day i plugged my electric razor into it. ever since the tv is blurry no matter where i plug it in. before i scrap it id like to try to fix it myself as a learning exp. any help would be appreciated. in lamens terms please. thanks

 

I'm going to assume this TV isn't very big since it is used in the car. The electric razor may have been a coincidence or it may have spiked the input voltage to the TV. These little units don't have much protection from that sort of thing.

Blurry? Again, I am going to assume "out of focus". This leads me to the high voltage power supply. I would be inclined to believe the spike trashed the high voltage regulator and the voltage is now above it's standards. This voltage can be anywhere from 25,000 volts to 44,000 volts depending on make or model and brand. If the high voltage is running higher than normal, the picture may even appear brighter. The focus voltage on this set is derived from the high voltage power supply. It is a step-down voltage (usually around 4000 volts) and is used to focus the electron gun in the picture tube. If the high voltage is out of tolerance, the focus voltage is out of tolerance, also. Hence, you have a blurry picture. If you can get a schematic on the set, the first place to check is that HV regulator. In the meantime, don't try to run it. If the HV is running unchecked, it is a good candidate for a fire.
