TV Wall mount studs too far apart

I ordered a TV wall mount online last week without checking my studs first. Unfortunately this mount is for 16inch studs and my townhouse has 24 inch studs. I really don't want to return this mount, because it was a good price, the type I wanted(full swivel and tilt) and I can't find a similar one to it for 24inch studs. I'm not very "handy" so I googled info and some people say to put painted plywood from stud to stud and hang the mount on that??? Others have said cut out some drywall and place 2x4 from stud to stud?? Are any of ideas safe? Anyother suggestions?

I would like to hang this soon, because my son is about to start crawling and I don't want him to accidentally grab the TV and fall on him. (yes our current TV stand is that low).

P.S. I have a 42inch TV and my mount is a Cheetahmounts APDAM3 LCD/Plasma wall mount.

Welcome to the forums! I gather the location you desire doesn't span two studs. Surely the frame is wider than 24". If you can't get it centered over two studs, both of the solutions mentioned would work. The plywood would probably be the least obtrusive and require no sheetrock repair. Let us know if you need more information.

That particular model is only adjustable to 17"OC according to the specs. Most other "gantry" style mounts like that will adjust to 26" to accomodate either standard plus some margin of error. I would just return it and get one that allows for the 24"OC spacing. That'll save you the hassle of having to install ugly spanners (you would need two) or do drywall work, and the prices should be similar for the same style.
