VCR turns off after starting to play

The Sylvania DVC841GC loads & ejects smoothly, however makes a loud clattering sound randomly, sometimes after just sitting there plugged in, then shuts down. Will start to play tape, shuts off, turned back on, ejects tape.
The noise comes from the loading area, seems like the random voltage to the loading mechanism is triggering the gears to activate, when there is no tape present. This one is a mystery.

Most of them have a flexible phenolic board that connect to the elevator. I would suspect that it has worn out.
