color gone on tv
#1

I have a 31" Toshiba tv, about 6-7 years old. Worked fine until about a year ago when the color disappeared, so then we watched it in b&w. 6 months ago the color came back and was fine until last week. Now the color comes and goes in the picture every couple of days. (When you use the remote you still get the menu in color, magenta) What could be the problem? Fixable or just put up w/? Thanks for any help!

Are you on cablevision, recheck your antenna connections, it seems that the color burst is on the edge. As the reception or tuning goes off, the color can go first. If you have cablevision , disconnect the cable wire , check for damaged or lose conenctors and then rescrew on tightly (don't break kind of tight, but good and snug).
Dust and dirt in the inside I have seen to cause problems in the past, I have had one tv, that had a switch on the baord (test/normal switch) and by switching this switch a couple of time corrected the problem. If your tv has a fine tuning control, try adjusting it slightly. There is a sentivity adjustment for color burst inside , but it may be difficult for me to tell you exactly where without the schematic and actually seeing it.
You get your menus in color because the signal is being generated inside the tv, not orginating from the cable/antenna input.
The other thing to check if a switch exists on your tv to go from 300 ohm antenna connection to cable (75ohm) connection, switch it back and forth a couple of times.
Also if you have an AGC switch try switching it off and on. There could also be a AGC control on the back, what controls are available from the back of the tv. Don't play with the green/blue/red controls if you find them as I assume that the picture is ok, but sometimes lack color.
How is the reception on it, crystal clear or have some noise in it, does the clearity change when the color is there or not there, or do you notice any change in the picture just before you lose color.
Please note that there are dangerous voltages inside your tv, lets be checking the outside possibilities first.

Good Evening, heidel925:
I fear that you are a victim of the Japanese circuit board that is forever plagued with cold solder joints. A solder connection that "doesn't quite connect" is affected by heat, cold, environment, and genuine "beating the dickens" out of a TV set.
Intermittant color? I would have someone look to the 3.58 Mhz oscillator circuit. If that quits, then the color will disappear. In some instances, it will make the picture appear to be more toward green than black and white.
Japanese circuits are notorious for cold solder connections (connections that don't quite make the grade). From your post, I would make the assumption that you are a prime candidate for someone to probe the boards, find the bad solder connection, resolder it, and allow you good folks to go on with your television viewing IN FULL COLOR.
The repair is not as expensive as if there were a bunch of electonic parts involved. You will have to pay for technician time and that is about all. I won't tell you that this time is cheap. But, at least you shouldn't have to take out a loan on your house to pay it.

I seen a few people on here that don't have a lot of good comments about japanese electronics perticularly with their workmanship. This is all a personal choice of course, and 31 " is a good size tv, and everything else seems to be working good on it, and when there is color , I assume it is ok, so if it not something simple as I mentioned, then it might be worth the repair.
Smokey does usually know what he is talking about, I have been fortunate enough to know his background, and his opinions can always be trusted.
I usually feel if the repair is going to approach 1/2 of what it would cost to replace it, I usually say to consider that route. I rarely if ever pay for a repair, I buy cheap, when something pops up that I can't handle myself, I just replace it. Labour is something I hate paying with a passion. However in some instances it might be the best option , again it is a personal choice whichever is the most ecconical.
By the way Smokey I thank you for the referal , I got an email from Brandon, I didn't know I made an impression on you. I tried to email you but was unable to get your email.

Good evening, Don:
I have a close association with Japanese and Korean electronics to the tune of of $2.5 million a year. I see what works, what doesn't work, and why the ones that do not work need to be fixed.
And, yes, I recommended you to Brandon to moderate this site. I know Big Mike has his certificate to be a long haul truck driver and he is going to be hard pressed to find the time to do justice to this site. (Sorry, Big Mike, but that is the way I see it)
I am going to be in and out on this site as my life changes. Branden is a great webmaster (and I may have spelled his name wrong....Sorry!) The site is a great idea and has nothing but growth potential. Using the minds of the professionals who love to show their knowledge...is a great idea.
I have been a moderator on a two or three of the groups of inquiries. I've done Automotive, Small Appliances, and Radio and Television. I love to help.
For the interim, if you desire to talk more closely, you can reach me at oldnavy@nac.net. I answer all emails. But, I am retiring, am in transit, and will show up on the site full time when I get settled. Then I will have the time, my super computer, and a great love for this site.

Actually yes I am getting ready to drive professionally. But I have made arrangements to have satellite communications for internet and email. I will still be able to stop in here every other day or about the same as I do now. I check in often but do not always post. I verify that posts are acceptable and correct and then give my opinion when needed. Unless Brandon feels like I am not moderating this and the computer forum correctly I had no intentions of giving up duties as a moderator on DIY. Sorry this sounds so gruff but I take these duties serious and will continue to provide my knowledge unless otherwise told not to do so. Thanks, Mike Melton.

Good Evening, heidel925:
I apolgize for all the unnecessary influx of posts on your site. There was a crisis on the site where folks had to get in touch with each other suddenly. Emails were sort of "screwed up". Unfortunately, it all came together on your thread. The crisis has been averted and things are going along normally. On behalf of DoItYourself.com, I offer my apologies and appreciate your understanding.
And, please tell us if you fixed your problem. We promise not to run amuk again. LOL.
