Quick Coaxial Cable Question

I subscribe to Charter Cable for our TV, internet, and land line phone systems. I have an additional digital TV and would like to attach it to the cable. Can it be attached to the same cable, via splitter, that feeds the Wi-Fi modem or must I branch off a cable that goes to other televisions? To be perfectly clear here, I'm wondering if I can split the coax cable upstream of the Wi-Fi modem and feed it to the TV in addition to the modem. I hesitate merely plugging it in to try it out for fear of harming something.

The main line coming into the premises should be split. One line should go to the cable modem and one to the TV'S. The TV line should be split for further TV's.

You won't permanently damage anything by splitting the line before the modem but if the signal to the modem isn't strong enough it won't operate correctly. You won't damage anything if you try it.
