vcr loads normal with cover off, wont load with cover on

Tested IR & end sensors, both in & out of circuit, are ok, replaced the IR anyway, still loads normal with cover off.
It seems to catch on the right side of carriage when trying to load with cover on & stops, also noticed it will eject ok with cover on, but go right back in & load again.
Obviously missing something here that is light sensitive.

I had a similar problem once. I was trying to fix a friend's VCR. The thing would only work with the cover off. I was about to tell her to use it that way but it started to work. I still don't know why.

Is there a foil type lining on the inside of the cover? Is the cover bent & putting pressure on the machine, itself? Lubricate moving parts & clean whatever you can.

Are you using a test cartridge? They are a clear plastic "skeleton" that lets you see whats going on. AFAIK there are only the center emitter and 2 side detectors.

So your machine loads and plays fine with the cover off?

Could the cover be slightly bent? I know once years ago when I was still using a vcr I had something sitting on top of the vcr and it depressed the cover. The tape wouldn't load properly and did after I took the junk off of it. Not sure if that could be causing it but checking to see if the cover is flat or not might solve your problem.
