Tape play stops

Put a tape in the VCR, begins to play fine then kicks out of play mode; push play button, begins to play and kicks out again. Always worked fine, have tried other tapes and the same thing happens.

As you can see below --- Unfortunately it's difficult to say for certain sight unseen --- could be a mechanical or electronic problem --- More often than not , it's usually mechanical.

Anything from a broken or stretched *belt* -- dried out or worn drive idler -- dirty or worn or dried out capstan pinch roller are typical suspects. Other more involved mechanicals could be anything from timing of the gears being out -- seized or faulty capstan motor ( and/or other drive motors ) --- broken or stripped plastic gears.

Electronic issues could be anything from the microprocessor or pickup sensors or other related components in the tape transport circuitry --- drum speed sensing -- etc..

vcr issue

Thanks for the information; being there was never an indication something was mechancially wrong and the tapes do feed in ok, get released ok and rewind and fast forward.........guess I was hoping the issue might stem from very dirty heads etc since I am not sure they where ever cleaned since they had been left in the house.

I'll bet if you have the cover off, put a tape in, set it to play, and watch the hubs inside the tape.... you'll see one stop turning and then the play mode will be stopped. That would be the take-up reel and the rubber drive idler is worn/defective.
