SONY SLV-770HF Damaging Tapes

I removed and lubed the sluggish arm assembly (the one that swings around and has a spring under it) which improved things. The problem remains that the guide roller assembly (blue roller in the photo) which slides up towards the video head when loading, is crinkling the tape as it goes across it on the top. Observing closely, everything sometimes seems fine, but then the tape starts riding high on this roller ever so slightly, crinkling the upper edge of the tape. Any ideas on how to correct this?

Welcome to the forums.

Other than cleaning and making sure the guide posts seat properly, there isn't much you can do without alignment equipment.

check for blobs of oxide or dirt on all rollers and guides and also the main head wheel.

A blob can cause the tape to shift slightly up or down and crinkle an edge against another guide or pulley.

I cleaned and lubed at the indicated points and I am still getting some very slight crinkling of the tape on the top side. I guess this one has reached the end of its life cycle. Thanks for the tips.

Sony makes a good machine so it may be worth investing in it's repair if you need a VHS machine.
I'm not even sure you can buy a new one any more.
