Question

Help! My father in law has a sick Zenith. No picture, perfect sound. The screen has a black background with one thin colorful thin line running across the screen. Can you help?

Good Morning, Criss:

I can't help beyond telling you what the problem is. The condition is called "Vertical Collapse" and the problem is usually centered around either the Vertical Oscillator or Vertical Driver circuits. There are any number of components in these two circuits that call the picture to collapse and the only way to determine the component is one on one troubleshooting on the bench.

It's not a serious failure and would be worth an estimate from the local technician to repair. If the picture was good on the set, then check for some prices. If the set is
old and not worth the repair, then it is time to consider a replacement.

Remember, too, that we are getting close in time to the era where this set will be obsolete. While that is a few years away, perhaps it is time to consider HDTV in the equation.

Great Web Site!

Smokey,
I talked to a local t.v. repair man about my father-in-law's
Zenith. He was impressed that I knew what was wrong with the t.v. I did tell him that I had gotten my information from you. He agreed with the information you had given me and felt that the t.v. was worth repairing. He quoted me a price range of $80 - $140. After talking to my in-laws we all agreed that it was not worth repairing
due to the fact that the t.v. is 8 years old and a nice replacement can be purchased for around $250 at WalMart or Sam's.
Thank you for the great information!
This is a great website!

Talking

Good Morning, Criss:

That's a wise decision on the repairs of the set. An eight year old set may have other little problems lurking in the background.

It is wise to think about purchasing a set these days with HDTV capability. In a few short years, the old television broadcasting we have enjoyed for so long will disappear in favor of the newer, high definition systems. It is worth a consideration at this point.

Glad you like our site. Tell all your friends. We like meeting new people.
