tv picture

I have an 8 year old 27 inch panasonic tv. 4 months ago the picture colour went bad, so that everything appears extremely dark and the picture is barely visible with very little color. Since then I have turned on the tv half a dozen times with the same poor result. Two days ago I turned it on again with the same poor result except that after 15 or so minutes a normal picture returned. Yesterday when I turned it on the problem was there again, however, and even after leaving the set on for an hour a normal picture did not return. During all this time I have received a perfectly normal picture from the PIP. Can anyone tell me what the problem is, how to fix it, the likely cost, and whether this is worthwhile. Thanks

Good Morning, angusoliver:
From the description, it sounds like the primary video amplifier has failed. The fact that the picture returns now and then indicates that it is probable that you have a bad connection (solder joint) in and around the video amplifier.
If you are up to doing some checks inside the set on your own, come back and I will give you some guidance. If you feel uncomfortable doing these things, it is best call out the technician to have a look at it. Either way, I do not believe this to be a serious or costly problem and is worth a look inside.
