Sony Tape Deck Problem

I recently bought a used Sony 250 reel tape deck. Let me say at the outset, I am reasonably handy but have no experience in working on this type of equipment. At first everything seemed to work OK but last night I noticed that the take-up reel (right side as you look at the deck) had stopped turning and the tape was wrapping around the small rubber roller at the right side of the tape head assembly (pinch
roller?). I didn't notice this right away and there was subsequently a bit of a mess unwinding about 20 ft. of tape without damaging it. The reel turns as it should almost all of the time but I am now VERY reluctant to leave it running for fear that it will repeat the recent problem.

The question is...what would most likely cause this type of problem and how might I correct it? I have not made any attempt to inspect the inner workings of that tape transport assembly and don't know exactly how to properly enter the case. The unit is housed in a "wood" cabinet. So far I have not cleaned any part of the unit.

Thumbs up

Good Morning, jpsolo:
It isn't often we hear about reel to reel decks anymore. I think I am about the last person in this city that still owns one.

Two things come to mind:
1) Clean the tape path good with a Q-Tip and denatured or isopropl alcohol paying attention to the pinch roller. The roller accumulates oxide during tape running and will often become "gummy". When this happens, it will grab the tape like flypaper and wrap it.

2) By all means open up the unit and look inside. The hubs are usually belt driven and you may have a bad belt on the take up hub. If this is case, remove the belt and check around at some of the local electronics distributors. They may not have the exact replacement but they can match it up with items they have in stock.

Thanks

Smokey - Thanks for the advice. I'll get some alcohol and give it a good cleaning.

Smokey offers another word of advice:

Stop by Radio Shack and pick up a tape path demagnetizer. A simple unit that removes residual magnetizism from the tape path and reduces tape hiss. Follow the directions on the label.
