Good Morning, mab:

The periodicity for cleaning a television is dependent upon the environment around the set. If you have a rather dusty atmosphere, once every couple of years is sufficient. Most sets never see cleaning until they conk out and the back has to come off it.

The cleaning ritual is varied dependent upon what is available. A soft bristled brush to break the dust loose and a vacuum cleaner are pretty much the norm. At the shop, we always used compressed air OUTSIDE the shop to clean them out. Always remember to be gentle in your cleaning efforts because of the little components that stick up off the circuit boards can be easily broken.

Whenever I think about cleaning sets, I am reminded of a new RCA TV I serviced in a rather old house in Tennessee.
I opened the back and about a thousand live cockroaches fell into my lap. That one needed a can of RAID as part of the cleaning process.
