Sharp CD player won't play CD's

I have a Sharp Mini Component System (CD-C401) that has a CD player with a tray unit that can hold 3 CD's. The tray unit is operating very slowly and the player won't play a CD at all - it displays "99".

It will not access an optical lens cleaning CD either. I tried searching Sharp's website but could not find any helpful information there.

Thanks in advance!

Cool Optics

Lets see, Sharp, inexpensive equipment that does a good job for the price. Try here http://www.sharp-usa.com/ but when I did a search for your unit I came up empty. So it’s either very new or very old or your in the UK etc. I will say a fairly new model from maybe France? That’s all Google comes up with. The optics are failing regardless of where it’s from. If it’s newer it may be worth one repair, if it’s an older unit then trash it and buy a new one. Optics are generally designed to last about two years if you’re lucky and they aren’t banged around etc. I have seen optics go longer but only with an occasional adjustment and this may be your case too, it just needs to be brought back into alignment via voltage adjustment with an oscilloscope etc. you can get a schematic for the unit here http://www.treasurechestcorp.com/Sha....sm.audio.html

Sharp CD player won't play CD's

It's a US model - bought in Madison, Wisconsin. But we bought it about 4+ years ago. Thanks for the info on the average life of the optics - it wasn't that expensive, so I guess it just became a radio!

Thanks for your reply!
