I beams

How do you build and install an I-beam between two floors of a dormer?

Welcome to the forums Patricia!

Are you referring to a steel I beam [that you would buy and then install] or a wood header that you build out of 2x and plywood? Not sure I understand a dormer having 2 floors ??

I guess, a wood header, but I thought you could build an I-beam from wood?
The dormer, being an extension, is one room over another. the floor of the second story needs to be reinforced from underneath.

I would say, get a book on framing, and talk to a structursl engineer about your plan. Headers need a load path so its likely that your floor joists need to be tripled where the header will bear. Other inspectors will want to see lvl's or iron beams in the floor.
