Doorway advice

Attch shows my doorway from the great room to the garage (and basement if you turn right). I think another standard door would be redundant... maybe a sliding barn door style? I don't want to leave it open to keep the dogs and heat upstairs in winter, but most of the year I don't mind it open.

Heat does not go down, It rises.

A barn door would work, it will just take up 30"+ of wall space. You could maybe do a pocket door, but that will require opening up the wall and installing the pocket.

Barn doors would give privacy but that's about it. They roll about 2" away from the wall, so it's not like they are much of a barrier for air or sound. Barn doors must be about 2" - 4" wider than the opening they cover if you don't want a line of sight around the edges.

And dogs would probably quickly figure out how to open it.

so maybe just make it an arched doorway? thought about it but some kind of barrier would be nice... and my dogs prob would not figure out how to open it, well maybe one.

Having a mudroom off the garage is not out of the ordinary, so in my eyes, a second door does not seem odd in any way. If there is a way that it could be installed such that you could open it 180 degrees without losing space in the room, that would work. A little old fashioned, but a split door would work as well. Open the top half for the view, leave the bottom half closed for the dogs.

Maybe do just a wrapped opening and put a pet gate at the top of the stairs to keep the puppies up stairs.

How about a bi-fold door?

Wrapped opening, meaning you just wrap the studs with drywall and install corner bead, and paint. Or install wood trim that matches the rest of the house. It is a doorway without a door.
