Crawl space dehumidification system?
Hi All,
I just bought a small cape house in Boston that has no basement just a crawlspace but the furnace is down there- it's been dry after rain but there is a TON of mold/mildew which will need professional removal. It's ruined a lot of the floor joists so THAT's getting repaired too ($ cha-ching)
Anyways, a dehumification system with a fan and humidity sensor has been recommended... I don't know what brand or what they're going to advise
but does anyone out there have some experience with ventillating a closed in basement/humid crawlspace??? I got 2 estimates so far- but I'm more concerned with the ongoing cost with how this "system" works???
There's a stationary dehumifier in the basement of our condo now and it costs a fortune to run each month. The new space is only ~800sq ft

I honestly don't know what to suggest since this is not a common things to have crawl space here..
Check with your local building inspector/city hall to see if they have some tips or something?? I've seen on here Ed talking about plastic liner...
maybe Ed will be able to help us here.

My home inspection guy recommended cutting windows into the foundation and/or installing the fan system. I guess it really needs air and ideally light too but he said the ventillation was key as long as there was a humidity sensor... I probably won't do the window thing since that'll be costly, I called around and no concrete cutters would do it without a contractor involved-
then they said you'd need someone to put in the windows and I'm surely not gonna crawl in down there- yuck
spiders and God knows what... can't run out either...
I'll see what others suggest too. There must be some solution/contraption.
