Messed up install of whole house humdifier?
My daughter's system does not make sense to me, mine doesn't either.
Hers, the water is tapped off between 2 water heaters running in series, so hot water is the supply. Lime scale built up and the solenoid valve leaks through, so there is lots of water all the time. The supply valve is also leaking, through a lot, and out a little. The media is scaled almost solid. I found all this while trying to figure out why her AC quit. That turned out to be a start capacitor for the compressor. There was water dripping all over the place and since it is mounted directly above the air handler, I have to wonder how messy it might be down in the blower. There is a source of cold water very close, so why was that not used? The humidifier itself is installed in the side of the ducting after the air handler, which is what I would expect.
Mine is installed the same, but has an extra feature. There is 6" ducting (with a manual shutoff damper) going from the side of the humidifer to the return duct. It has no water supply to it yet, and I hope to convince the wife that we don't need it, but that will be decided come winter time. We plan on heading south most winters, so maybe it won't be much of an issue between us.
In both cases, furnaces are gas. She has AC, I do not. Her house is 6 years old, ours is new.
I don't understand the return line on mine, or why hers was installed using hot water. Her HVAC guy says some applications require hot water, some cold.
Sounds hinky to me....
