musty smell in basement , worse after rainfall!

I have a 500 sq ft basement and a new 65 pint dehumidifier that keeps the basement on avg 45% and after a rainfall it rises to 55% for a day or 2!

the basement is dry loooking but gets a mustier smell after the rain and my first floor smell a bit musty also. the first floor I still think is mostly ue to the 20 yr old carpet though.

can anyone give me some guidance on what to do next, iss my dehumidifer big enuff?

The rise in humidity suggests rain water infiltration. I'd see if I could figure out where. What kind of grade and landscaping do you have around your house?

Gutters and downspouts should be clear. Downspouts should be connected to drains and water carried away from structure to french wells. Soil should slope away from structure to carry water away from foundation. If you have efflorescence, you have moisture penetration that is carrying salts to the surface of the blocks. Your pictures reveal moisture issues in the basement.

Messed up install of whole house humdifier?

My daughter's system does not make sense to me, mine doesn't either. Hers, the water is tapped off between 2 water heaters running in series, so hot water is the supply. Lime scale built up and the solenoid valve leaks through, so there is lots of water all the time. The supply valve is also leaking, through a lot, and out a little. The media is scaled almost solid. I found all this while trying to figure out why her AC quit. That turned out to be a start capacitor for the compressor. There was water dripping all over the place and since it is mounted directly above the air handler, I have to wonder how messy it might be down in the blower. There is a source of cold water very close, so why was that not used? The humidifier itself is installed in the side of the ducting after the air handler, which is what I would expect. Mine is installed the same, but has an extra feature. There is 6" ducting (with a manual shutoff damper) going from the side of the humidifer to the return duct. It has no water supply to it yet, and I hope to convince the wife that we don't need it, but that will be decided come winter time. We plan on heading south most winters, so maybe it won't be much of an issue between us. In both cases, furnaces are gas. She has AC, I do not. Her house is 6 years old, ours is new. I don't understand the return line on mine, or why hers was installed using hot water. Her HVAC guy says some applications require hot water, some cold. Sounds hinky to me....Read More

When shopping around my city for a portable dehumidifier, I noticed all brands are generally available except Frigidaire models. It seems these sell out immediately and Best Buy has them on long-term back order. Is there something special about Frigidaire dehumidifiers (made by Electrolux) that these buyers know? They do seem better built than the LG, GE, Haier, and Whirlpool models I looked at.Read More
