Dehumidifier Settings?

I have a Sears Kenmore 70 pint dehumidifier with electronic controls. I am wondering what setting (shown in %) would be good to leave it on where it will dehumidfy to a comfortable degree but not waste $$$ on lowering the humidity beyond comfort levels. (it has a settings range of from 35% to 70%)

45% - 50% should be good!

My Frigidaire 50-pint has a range setting of 50-70%. It assumes 60% as an average setting. I've heard 60% is minimum to prevent mold. So wouldn't 60% be sufficient?

NO! It could be 60% at the unit but 70% at other side of room. Plus the lower the RH the cooler it will fill.

Another question from me. For those of us who use a dehumidifier for the basement, all windows, doors, and outside access must be closed for the unit to dehumidify properly. But then doesn't this indoor basement air remain uncirculated and stale? And what about the unhealthful risk of possible radon gas in such a sealed basement situation? I've read other posts that say trying to ventilate a basement by opening windows to the outside just adds to the basement moisture problem. So looks like there's a downside no matter what you do with the basement.Read More

Why do the experts here always recommend buying a dehumidifier in the 60-100 pint range when the AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) guide recommends much less for the same square footage and conditions. After all, dehumidifiers use lots of electricity (even Energy Star units), and the 60-100 pint units are going to be a big hit on the electric bill.
