Quick humidistat location question

The directions for my humidistat a Honeywell H8908B say it needs to be at least 8" upstream of the humidifier in the return air duct.

Not sure exactly what that means! Does it mean it has to be positioned 8" above where the humidifier is mounted?

Yes, if you have the unit mounted on the return, it needs to above it about 8". Or if you have it mounted on the supply, it needs to be 8" above the by pass.. But if your bypass is set before the humidistat, then you need to move the by-pass or put the humidistat in the hall way.

Then you can mount the humidistat anywhere on the return.. The 360 is best to put on the supply ductwork, not return.. The supply has the hot air to help add humidity to the air.
