Looking for best replacement for a very old Aprilaire 440 humidifier

We have a very old, and problematic Aprilaire 440 humidifier that we need to replace. Any help with choosing the best replacement would be appreciated. Would like to replace it with something that requires the least amount of changes to the plenum, etc.

The furnace blower runs constantly in our home, so please keep that in mind when making suggestions.

I don't know what kind of footprint this unit is.. Measure the opening and we can look at that to see what may fit in place for you.

I also have an Aprilaire 440 humidifier that I am looking to replace. Would you recommend a Aprilaire model 500 or 600 series unit? Also, manual vs automatic. If I go with the automatic unit, do I need to install something outside?

As I said to the last poster, I don't know the footprint since it's not listed online. so you are going to have to measure your opening and compair to the new unit.

I'd suggest the Auto set up, and it uses outdoor sensor, and have to run a wire outside.

Some thoughts on by pass humidifiers!

The by pass is like adding a new heat run so causes the furnace to run longer to heat the house. The humidifier on the return is like adding a new air intake in the furnace room so it may be using up combustion air supply starving the furnace. The damper in the Aprilaire 400 is a joke so I added another damper to the connection in the supply line still even with both dampers closed plenty of air is coming through due to the suction of the return. I may just seal both the return and bypass during the months when the humidifier is not needed something Aprilaire should have incorporated into the design of the humidifier. Finally is the increased wear and tear on the furnace and air conditioner (if one doesn't seal the ducts in summer) as well as the need for more oil and electricity worth having a by pass humidifier or does a room unit make more sense? I didn't think of any of this until this morning when it took the furnace a full hour to raise the temperature from 62 to 68.Read More

Hi, I read a similar post but that was for a different furnace so it does not apply to my case. Here are my connections and problem. Humidistat R ------------------------ Carrier Furnace 24V Hum (says on the board) Humidistat C ------------------------ Carrier Furnace 24V Com (says on the board) Humidistat ODT ------------------------ Outside Sensor Humidistat OTD ------------------------ Outside Sensor Humidistat H(1) ------------------------ Directly to Brown wire coming out of Humidifier Humidistat H(2) ------------------------ one end of 24V Transformer supplied with the Humidifier other end of 24V Transformer supplied with the Humidifier is connected to the Brown wire coming out of Humidifier. 24V Transformer is powered by 120V continuous supply through terminal before furnace. The black power [ATTACH]8183[/ATTACH]chord out of Humidifier is also connected to 120V terminal where 24V Transformer is connected. [B]Problem[/B]: Humidistat control shows number in blue only when heat is called but the green light ("humidifier On" light), the fan and the solenoid valve don't power on unless I turn the humidistat nob to "Test/Reset". As soon as I turn the humidistat to test/reset, everything works perfectly until thermostat temperature is achieved and furnace shuts off. When temperature drops and furnace turns on, I have to turn the knob again to "Test/Reset" to turn on the fan/solenoid valve. I am guessing it has to do with the connections but am not sure.
