Unhappy Frigidaire continually humming while off

I have a 5-year old Frigidaire CAD704DWL12 dehumidifier. A couple of week ago I noticed that it was humming and producing a bit of heat from the top vent. At the time it had been plugged in but turned off for a while as it wasn't needed.

Concerned I unplugged it and attempted some troubleshooting.
  • it is in my unfinished basement
  • appears to function ok when I turn it on
    • I didn't leave it on long enough to see if it pulled any water out of the air though
    • showing 70% humidity
  • when off it hums loudly - sounds like when my fridge is running but louder
  • the fan is not running until I turn it on
  • I've managed to open it up halfway and things look very clean and undamaged
    • can't really see what things up front look like
  • no frost from the parts that I can see - expected since it hasn't ran in weeks
  • plugged it in a few times with no change in behaviour
Weather has been unusually hot here - more like the height of summer and not spring. Recently the normal temps have returned with a lot of rain

I would appreciate.any advice. At this point I am wondering if it is going to be too expensive to fix.

Welcome to the forums.

I'm guessing you're from Canada as that's a Canadian built Frigidaire unit.
I don't have a parts listing to cover it.

The problem is the compressor relay has burned on.
The contacts get stuck shut requiring either a new relay or the power control board to be replaced.
The relay is soldered to the board which requires a soldering iron and some basic board repair knowledge.

The following is a link that is very similar to your board. The relay is the black part all the way at the top. It may be the same board as yours but I can't confirm it.

Thanks Pjmax!

I'm glad to hear that it is just the relay. I do have a soldering iron around here somewhere but haven't used it since the '80's so I may be a tad bit rusty

I guess my next step will be to figure out how to get at the control board. I have the back panel off and the front\side panel nearly off. Cannot seem to determine how it is hooked into the front grill. Will give it another crack later this weekend.

Anyhow, I have to run. Thanks again.

The relay will have a part number on it. The one in the picture is a popular replacement.
I keep a bunch around for replacements.
