Dove season.

Dove season opens up here on Sept 1st. I had made all kinds of plans to go with the neighbor and then I find out the other guy I work with is taking off the 1st and 2nd, "just to do nothing he says" but wont trade the 1st for the 6th and he would still have a 5 day weekend. It's his choice and he beat me to the request but I sure hope he don't ask me for any favors anytime soon.

I'll get out Saturday I guess and there are plenty of Doves that I don't think they'll all be gone but they get freaked after the 1st day.

Hey Mattison, I've never gone out for doves. What sort of firearm would you use for those little guys. Do they have a limit on how many you can take? And if you're planning on eating them, how many would you need to fill your belly?

Excuse my ignorance, but like I said, I've never gone out for them before.

12 or 20 guage works fine, semi auto is best but a pump will work. I think the daily limit is 6 but I may be wrong and that's about what will make a meal. You only get the breast meat and it ends up being about as much meat as a few chicken wings. Pretty good eat'n. Little different since it's like dark and white meat together.

we open the 1st as well...its a tradition down here. i am taking off the 1st and 2nd and will make a "journey". i am heading to West Texas for 2 days then back to the dallas.

our limits are 15 per day so i plan on having about 60 of the grey darts on the grill on labor day.

i got a new 20 for this year and cant wait!

here is how i cook them:

-fillet the meat off the bone so i have 2 fillets per bird
-take a fillet, get a japaleno and fill with cream cheese, put another dove fillet on top of that and make a "sandwich" with them and roll up in a strip of bacon and stick a couple toothpicks in it to keep it together.
-grill on medium coals until the bacon is done.

use your imagination on this. put a piece of pineapple in them, cover with sour cream before serving, etc....

60 dove "poppers" will feed 4 grown men

ooooo, it was UGLY! Opening morning turned into a slaughter...if we could post pics here i would show you the final take. 420 mourning and white wings met their demise within a couple hours on opening morning. The next day another 30 were downed between my hunting buddy and myself. The next day, yup, another 30...took a little longer, maybe 2 1/2 hours but still scratched out limits. Went again on monday by myself and sat in the shade of a haybale and ended up shooting 15 all within about 20 yards of my set up.

Now....10 days till teal season opens down here...i found a flooded field (60 or so acres) that was holding a couple hundred teal.

Nice job SB. Sounds like you had a pretty good outing. 420 birds in a couple hours - what a slaughter indeed. I read something about your set-up. Does this mean you have a decoy spread or something? Oh, and those poppers do sound good.

I'm holding out for Oct 1st, when our deer season(archery) opens here. It's coming fast, but not fast enough.

Your dog sure likes to ham it up for the camera. I can't wait till my son can start hunting with me. He's old enough now, I just have to light a fire under him to read the hunter safety course book so he can take the test.

Ha. I thought that was you. I found this place while looking for places to download free MP3 e-caller sounds. It came up in a Google search. I answered a few questions in the fence section since that is what I do, then I found this part. Nice site. Lots of different topics. Won't replace the fuge though.
