Something digging up lawn

Some critter is digging up my lawn at night. See photos below. Does anyone have any idea what it is? Raccoon? Possum? It comes out at night so I have not been able to catch it in the act. I have had a few holes here and there, but all the damage below occurred in one night.
How can I prevent further damage?

My guess would be skunks digging for grubs and worms. Probably more than one from the looks of the damage. Trap and relocate is the best. Any of the deterrents will simple drive them to your neighbors lawn until you stop using it, and then they are back. Local animal control might help. Night cameras could catch them in the act.

If it's happening at night it is definitely skunks digging for grubs. Live trapping and removing is probably your best bet. You local animal control guy might lend you a trap.

If you are in an area where you can shoot, a .22 to the head will also take care of the problem. Just make sure it's a kill shot.

Step 2 is to get rid of the grubs.

I can't shoot in my neighborhood, looks like it is step 2.
Any recommendation on how to get rid of the grubs? Is Milky Spore effective?

I've never used milky spore but everything I have read about it has been positive. It's just too expensive for the size of my yard. I just use Grub Ex.

Try the traps. A live trap like Hav A Hart is very effective on skunks. Bait the trap with chicken necks. Once you've caught the sucker you need to be a bit careful when approaching the trap. I've had success dropping a tarp over the trap.

After that it's just a matter of transporting to a distant forest or a distant in law's yard if you are so inclined.

Late comment, but I just returned from a location of a cabin in Western North Carolina and the lawn (about 4 acres) looked as if it were cut with a turning plow. Wild hogs. They tear up everything. I'm going back earlier in the morning. Nothing better than slow roasted wild hog. Just don't know what I'd do with a dozen of them. Good luck with your skunks. I'd rather have hogs.
