Barn Swallows

We have an annual problem with swallows nesting in the barn. They get a little aggressive by mid-summer.

We've tried the fake owls, but no help. We also tried hanging old CD's in the doors and windows, which, we were told, since they are shiny, the flashing from reflecting in the sun will keep them out. No way!

Anyone found a better solution?

Hi dm,
I suspect you would be happier if they just went away, but having grown up in farm country I have learned to appreciate them, they eat a ton of insects. If they did disappear you would have to wonder what you would get in their place.

One compromise might be building swallow houses for them and then sealing up the barn. If they stop nesting in the barn, they will find another place.

As for discouraging them, they are resourceful and will nest on the outside if they can't get in or find another location.

You can send them all over my way. Along with bats and purple martins, barn swallows are insect eating machines.
