Some unknown critters are digging up my lawn. Here are some pictures:

The ground near these dug area felt soft, almost spongy or hallow when walked on. I wasn't able to find any underground tunnels. What animals are responsible for these and how can I keep them away?

If you think there are tunnels leading from the holes then you may have moles or voles. Where are you located?

Agree with the moles. Just be glad it isn't hogs. Our state is now setting up a type of posse situation to help control the hog situation. In one night they can make your lawn look as if someone had plowed it with a turning plow.

I believe it is moles. The spongy ground is most likely the underground tunnels that they make. A good bait for moles is the rubbery, gummy worms that are formulated with a rodenticide. They can be any brand name; what’s important is the gummy worm formulation. Our Tractor Supply carries them; Maybe Lowes and HD too.

Example:

Bell Laboratories - Products
