Keep chipmunks / mice from central A/C unit

I recently posted a question on central a/c when my outside unit stopped working. The repair guy came and ($350 later) found a nest in the unit and wiring / components destroyed. I think it's chipmunks but may be mice.

Either way I want to create a screen to keep the critters out. I'm thinking of making something out of galvanized stucco netting but have two questions. 1) Is stucco netting at approx. 1 inch holes sufficient to keep animals out? It seems OK for chipmunks but maybe not for mice. Is there a better alternative?

Going to need 1/4 hardware cloth to keep nice out, even chipmunks could get in wire that course.
Search Results for hardware cloth 1/4 at The Home Depot
