Need Idea's to keep Sparrow's out - trying to build nest

So I have on my outside patio some grooves where small sparrow's are trying to build nests. Behind this is some wiring so I don't want them to damage anything.

I put some plywood I had left over there and one of my kids owl toys but all they do is knock it aside onto the ground.

I went to the hardware store to get bird spikes but the salesmen said it won't work. He suggested some mesh wiring but the guy in that department said he doesnt know how I would be able to install the mesh on the top side as the birds would just fly above it.

I've attached a picture. Any ideas would be helpful. Just want to keep them away so they don't damage the wiring.

That's a really tough spot...I'd say used doubled chicken-wire with the meshed overlaid so they are half the size of the original openings...but this is definitely Not my game...

Hopefully someone will pipe in with some good workable ideas~!~
