Holes in the lawn

Holes in the lawn
Over the last month or so, my lawn has become a breeding ground for holes.
They are about 1.5 to 3 inches in diameter and seem to go straight down for the most part, but some are at an angle. There is no sign of the dirt, so I'm pretty certain it's not moles. The grass right around the hole is usually dead or dying by the time I notice it (not sure if that info is helpful).
A couple friends who are more knowledgeable about yards think the holes are from mice or snakes. I haven't seen any snakes at all in my yard, but I know there are mice out there.
I live in SW Washington state.
Any ideas about the cause or cure?
Thanks!

Gee not sure about that. 1.5-3in wow and no dirt. Well you can call the local County Extension agent(in county section of phone book) and they can probably identify what is causing it. Or contact a local lawn treating co. They will usually give free estimates.
